30. The Ongoing Bout
Freedom of speech will lose its punch when we no longer
fight censors, moralists, and other top contenders from the
Middle Ages.
A boxer can defend his title against soft competition and
remain a champion for as long as one of the many boxing
organizations says he is. He can grow old, flabby, rusty,
and retire with a bulging bank account and a rosy record
of victories. Let freedom of speech take a similar, safe
course, and future generations will be handed a torch that
has been put out by a hard, extreme right.
